No matter how vehicle trends may come and go, the sedan always remains a favorite. These roomy cars provide plenty of backseat space, a generous cargo area in the trunk, and smooth handling on city streets and highways. When you are in the market for a new sedan, there are two Hyundai models that might get your attention: the Elantra and the Sonata. Both of these sedans have plenty to offer, and each is a very good choice in its own way. However, there are certain factors that may make one somewhat more appealing to you than the other. By comparing the two, you can determine what matters the most in a sedan so that you can easily choose your next vehicle.

Price

If price is a factor to you, then you may find the Elantra more appealing. After all, the MSRP for a base model is only $17,150**. You can even get an upgraded model for no more than $21,700. That's an affordable price for a sedan. The Sonata is priced a little higher at $21,750 MSRP** for a base model. But, then again, this car is larger and it offers more passenger and cargo room along with upgrades not available on the Elantra. Either way, even the base price of the Sonata is affordable when compared to other sedans. So, it really comes down to a matter budget and how much car you want and need.

Safety

The two cars are almost identical in safety. They both have received top marks in crash tests. Both are equipped with standard safety features such as Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-Lock Brakes, Brake Assist, and Multiple Airbags. One big difference is the anti-theft system. An alarm is available for the Elantra as optional equipment, but it comes standard in the Sonata. While some people aren't very concerned with these alarm systems, others consider them an important feature. It may be something you wish to consider.

Fuel Efficiency

It seems like gas prices can go up and down on a whim. Many current consumers value a smaller car with greater fuel efficiency. Some people don't mind sacrificing miles per gallon for a bigger vehicle. You will need to determine which of these categories you fit in. Either way, even with the bigger of these two cars, you will find that the fuel efficiency is good compared to other sedans on the market.

The smaller Elantra gets 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway*. The bigger Sonata isn't far behind at 25 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway*. Neither of these would be considered bad by any means, but if you are especially concerned with fuel efficiency, then the Elantra may be somewhat more appealing to you. Keep in mind too, though, that the Sonata has a bigger gas tank, so even with slightly lower numbers, it will go farther without needing a fill up if you are constantly on the go.

Sedans are cars that will always be popular because of their comfort and extra space, ease of handling and fuel efficiency.
