From its humble beginnings as an economy car, the Hyundai Elantra has blossomed into one of the best compact sedans around. The winning streak continues with the 2016 Hyundai Elantra, which is deep in the nameplate’s fifth production cycle. The 2016 edition improves on everything that makes the Elantra a great selection: roomy interior, great fuel economy, smooth ride, and comfortable ride. The 2016 Elantra is available in four flavors: SE, Value Edition, Sport, and Limited.

Performance

Want an engine powerful enough to get you into traffic in no time at all without sacrificing fuel efficiency? There’s the 1.8-liter Nu inline four-cylinder engine, which provides 145 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque. And if you land in the aptly named Sport trim, the engine is tweaked to 173 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque. Although the engine on the SE and Sport trims is hitched to a six-speed manual transmission, you can exchange it for the six-speed automatic transmission, which is on the other two trims. Featuring SHIFTRONIC technology and the Active ECO system, the automatic gearbox is engineered for improved real-world fuel economy, which peaks at 32 miles per gallon.

Interior

The 2016 Hyundai Elantra sedan has a total interior volume of 110.4 cubic feet. That’s more than what other leading compact cars in the market offer. The advantage is that you and your passengers have a roomier commute and a more relaxing experience. Power-adjustable driver’s seat is standard on the 2016 Elantra, with power lumbar support added on the Sport and Limited and front-seat heating capability on all trims but the SE. For optimizing comfort, go for the top-level Limited, which also comes with back-seat heating capability and leather upholstery.

Features

Far from a moving appliance, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra is beautiful to look at, with a rising roofline and an elongated wheelbase. You can enhance it further with projector headlights with LED accents, LED tail lights, black chrome front grille, and huge 17-inch alloy wheels if you go with the Sport or Limited. For entertainment, the 2016 Elantra gets a six-speaker stereo system with a 3-month SiriusXM satellite radio subscription. With the upper-level Elantra trims, there will be optional or additional standard features like turn-signal indicators on the power side mirrors, front fog lights, push-button engine start, power sunroof, Bluetooth hands-free phone system, navigation system, and rearview camera.

Safety

The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is well equipped with a six-airbag system that includes occupant classification sensors for preventing the front passenger airbag from deploying if the front passenger is of insufficient weight. Also on the vehicle is a remote keyless entry security system with panic alarm; and a vehicle stability management system that incorporates traction control, electronic stability control, anti-lock braking (ABS), and motor-driven power steering. Small wonder why the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the Elantra sedan a 2015 IIHS Top Safety Pick.
