If you’ll pardon the cliché, the Hyundai Sonata has simply gotten better with age. Blessed with a generous list of technological features, a reasonable price tag, a wide variance of trims, and an outstanding warranty coverage, the Sonata has steadily pushed itself to the front of the midsize sedan pack since it made its debut in 1985. Arriving at the beginning of the car’s sixth production cycle, the 2016 edition shows that the Sonata is dedicated to being better than ever.

Performance

The SE, Sport, and Limited trims of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata are powered by the 2.0-liter Theta MPi inline four-cylinder (I4) engine, which has an output of 185 horsepower and 178 foot-pounds (lb-ft) of torque. The aptly-named Eco trim gets a smaller and more fuel-efficient 1.6-liter Gamma G4Fj twin-turbo I4, which has 7 less horsepower and 7 more lb-ft of torque. There are 2.0T versions of the Sport and Limited—named after the 2.0-liter Theta Turbo I4, which dwarf the other engines both in horsepower (245) and torque (260 lb-ft), and is the best choice for acceleration. While the Eco gets a seven-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission, a six-speed automatic gearbox goes on the other trims; both have SHIFTRONIC technology for changing gears on demand and adapting to your driving habits. Combined fuel economy is consequently top-notch, at an ETA estimate of 32 miles per gallon.

Interior

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata is more than your average five-seater sedan. It packs a passenger volume of 122.4 cubic feet, which is more virtually any car in its class. At 16.3 cubic feet, cargo space is also substantial, and you can even create more room for luggage—thanks to the 60/40 split-folding design of the rear seats. Depending on your trim choice, you can get a hefty list of upgrades to an already serene and upscale cabin; they include leather upholstery, woodgrain trim inserts, and power adjustability and heating or cooling capability on the seats.

Features

When on the road, the 2016 Hyundai Sonata keeps you entertained with the standard six-speaker stereo system with AM/FM radio, CD player with MP3 playback capability, HD Radio, Sirius XM satellite radio compatibility, Bluetooth hands-free phone system, Android Auto, and a 7-inch color touchscreen. On the Limited, Hyundai replaces it with a jaw-dropping nine-speaker 400-watt Infinity premium audio system, which comes with an 8-inch color touchscreen display. The 2016 Sonata is loaded with so many standard features, some of which are not even available in other midsize vehicles. Such features include a rearview camera, steering wheel-mounted controls, and Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system for recommending nearby points of interest.

Safety

Exclusive to the 2016 Hyundai Sonata is an automatic emergency braking system, which combines the rearview camera and a radar sensor to stop the car if a crash is imminent. This feature is standard on the Limited 2.0T. Also present is a seven-air bag system, which consists of front-facing driver and front passenger air bags, a driver knee air bag, front-seat mounted side impact air bags, and roof-mounted side curtain air bags. Other standard safety and security features include electronic stability and traction control systems, anti-lock braking, and electronic anti-theft system with panic alarm.
