Updated and truly new, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra emerges as a more spacious, and affordable compact car. The additional features, new safety offerings and extra power are all part of a package that is bigger than its predecessor. This car's redesign won the prestigious Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and its European partner.

Wider and more athletic, the Elantra enjoys a more composed stance. Its striking side profile is achieved with sleek character lines and special window shaping. Several key features, including underbody covers and a specially-engineered rear decklid, contribute to improved aerodynamics. Up front, a lower air dam channels air into the wheel wells. In back, the underside of the rear bumper is an aerodynamic spoiler to further reduce air drag.

Performance

When the engineers redesigned the Elantra, they wanted to give it more power without reducing its fuel economy. The result is a new Atkinson four-cylinder with an outlay of 147 horsepower. Gas mileage results are 29 mpg/city and 38 mpg/highway*. Improved systems reduce pumping loss, decrease heat, and increase combustion efficiency. The automatic transmission and rear suspension were also redesigned with greater efficiency in mind.

Interior

With the spacious interior design that yields 110.2 cu.ft. of volume, the 2017 Elantra is quite roomy for a compact sedan. Backseat riders will notice improved legroom and headroom. The Elantra also works hard to provide extras that the others don’t. Unlike others in its class, it offers an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a dual-zone automatic climate system. The memory controls for the power chair are another way it leads its class. The remarkably comfortable foam seats are made of a bio-degradable material, reducing the car’s eco-footprint. Completing the package, the Elantra has a sizable cargo hold that can quickly be expanded with the split-fold rear seat.

Features

The driver’s cockpit was rearranged for a more ergonomic flow. In fact, the center stack now boasts a horizontal line of controls that are placed at an angle toward the driver’s seat. These programmable buttons are in easy reach, allowing the driver to interact with entertainment systems more quickly. Standards include USB plug-ins for your smart devices and SiriusXM capability. On the seven-inch display, the driver can be informed by a rearview camera or be entertained by streaming audio. The bigger eight-inch display adds navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Safety

Equipped with seven airbags, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra has been re-engineered to be even stronger should an impact occur. These structural reinforcements include special seat frames that resist impact. Hyundai is offering many crash avoidance features that you won’t find on rival cars in this price range. This includes lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking. These go beyond alerts to include active response to danger. Pedestrian detection strengthens the warning package. Smart cruise control, another rarity in its class, can slow the car to match traffic. Class-exclusive dynamic bending lights turn with the car to better illuminate the road ahead.
