Hyundai Tucson vs Toyota RAV4

If you're in the market for a new SUV or crossover, the Tucson is the winner of J.D. Power and Associates coveted "Highest Ranked Small SUV In Initial Quality," while the Santa Fe was awarded in U.S. News' "Best Cars For The Money" segment. But between these two award-winning vehicles, which is the best for you?

Performance

The 2016 RAV4 is powered by a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four cylinder engine that generates 176 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque and is linked to a six-speed automatic transmission. The most basic model of the 2016 Tucson is a little weaker: it has a 2.0-liter four cylinder with 164 horsepower, 151 pound-feet of torque and a six-speed automatic similar to the Toyota’s. However, the story changes when it comes to all the other Tucson models. They are equipped with a high-tech seven-speed dual clutch transmission and a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine. The turbo matches the RAV4 in horsepower with 175 and exceeds it in torque with 195 pound-feet, giving it a zero-to-sixty time of about a second faster than the Toyota.

Fuel Economy

Both the 2016 RAV4 and the 2016 Tucson manage to break the 30 mile per gallon mark in their fuel economies*. The 2016 RAV4 gets up to 23 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg combined in a front-wheel drive configuration and 1 mpg less across the board in its all-wheel drive configuration. The 2016 Tucson manages to be even more frugal with up to 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway for a 29 mpg combined possible on both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive Tucson*.

Safety

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 and the 2016 Hyundai Tucson are near the absolute top where safety is concerned. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has nothing but positive things to say about both cars, having given them its top safety scores across the board as well as the Top Safety Pick Plus recognition. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is likewise very positive about how the 2016 RAV4 and the 2016 Tucson have performed in their crash testing. Both cars earned a five out of five overall score. However, the NHTSA only gave the 2016 RAV4 four out of five stars for both its rollover protection and its front impact crash test. The 2016 Tucson also scored four out of five on the rollover test, but got the top five out of five on its front crash assessment.

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 is an excellent compact SUV that offers performance, fuel economy and safety and would make for a nearly perfect choice in that segment if it was not for the 2016 Hyundai Tucson. Offering more spirited acceleration, better gas mileage and slightly better crash test scores, the 2016 Tucson goes that extra mile to come out slightly ahead of its Toyota competitor.
